Australian History at it’s finest. This massive traction engine is the largest ever built in Australia. So large and so slow that it took over two years (1917-1919) to make the journey from Melbourne to the Red Cliffs area.
Big Lizzie was used to clear vast expanses of land around the river at the Red Cliffs soldier settlement, it was capable of clearing up to 50 acres in a day. Big Lizzie provided 700 Soldier Settlement blocks for veterans of World War I and founded the town which honours her today. Her work at Red Cliffs was done in about four years.
By the early 1930s, Big Lizzie ran out of steam, her engine was sold to a quarry and she and her trailers were abandoned before they were rescued to stand guard in the centre of Red Cliffs.
